What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy is a modality for self-expression which integrates psychology and the creative process of art making as a means of communication. Feelings, ideas and experiences that are often difficult to express through language come to the surface and may be externalized through imagery, color, symbol and metaphor. Creating art within a safe space and therapeutic relationship provides an opportunity to explore and express our rich inner experiences and allows for personal insight, empowerment, and increased well-being.

Who is Art Therapy For?
Everyone can benefit from art therapy, whether it be to work through specific issues, or to tap into one’s creative potential. I work with children, youth, adults and elders. Some of the issues that art therapy can be supportive for are: grief and loss, trauma, coping with stress, fear and anxiety, transition, relationship dynamics, low self-esteem, personal identity, chronic pain and disease, and addictions.
The Creative Process of Art Making
There are various approaches to art making, from spontaneous art to guided directives. The client is supported and witnessed throughout their creative process. Possibilities are infinite. There is no "right or wrong" way to make art. Each individual has their own unique process of creation.
Shown below are some art examples: Clay work; an altered book; scribble drawing; blind drawing; drawing; sculpture with found and natural materials.

What is the Difference between Art Therapy and an Art Class?
Materials
Materials used in an art therapy session have a broad range including drawing and painting materials, clay and plasticine, collage and pre-cut images, natural materials, and recycled materials. A client may chose to work two-dimensionally with drawing or painting, or create three-dimensional art by creating sculptures; he or she may use and alter found materials; a client may chose to sit, or stand and incorporate movement while making art.
